Location

History

Orio sits in Horikawa-chō, Yahata-Nishi Ward, Kitakyushu, and is a 'Kitakyushu City' station under JR's special-zone fare scheme; it is the westernmost station on both the Kagoshima and Chikuhō main lines. Kyushu Railway opened its Orio on 28 February 1891, Chikuhō Kōgyō Railway opened a separate Orio on 30 August of the same year on a different site, and on 13 November 1895 the two were combined at the current location in Japan's first grade-separated, two-level station building — a wooden depot of asymmetric form, two storeys through the centre and on the Kagoshima Main Line side and single-storey towards Nōgata. As part of the long-running grade-separation project for the Orio district, a new consolidated station opened on 2 January 2021, bringing the three scattered ticket gates together into a single concourse, and the under-track shopping arcade Eki-Machi Ichi-Chōme Orio followed on 29 September 2023.

Notes

The station building completed at Orio in 1895 is recognised as Japan's first grade-separated, two-level railway station, and a stone monument by the taxi rank marks the site as the place of Japan's first grade-separated station. Valued as a building through which 'the modern architectural styles of the Meiji and Taishō eras can be read in layers', the old wooden depot was nonetheless replaced by temporary buildings in 2012 and demolished by 2013 for the elevation works; salvaged pieces such as decorative pillars, a circular bench and roof ornaments were kept and reinstalled in the new station building that opened in January 2021.
