History

Honjō Station is a relatively new station on Kyushu Railway Company's (JR Kyushu) Chikuhō Main Line (Wakamatsu Line), newly built on 15 March 2003. It was built near the site of Honjō signal station, which had existed until 1969, and surrounding roads were also improved to coincide with the station's construction. It functions as a pedestrian overpass doubling as an elevated station building, used for north-south passage in the area. The SUGOCA IC card became usable on 1 March 2009, and on 4 March 2017 it became unstaffed with the simultaneous introduction of the 'ANSWER' smart support station system across ten stations on the Wakamatsu Line. Its station number is JE02.

Notes

It is an elevated-concourse station with an island platform serving two tracks, and the station building itself, functioning as a pedestrian overpass, connects the north and south sides of an area that had been divided by a national highway; traffic signals and a crosswalk were also installed at the time the station was built.
