History

Ogikubo Station opened on 21 December 1891 as a station on the privately built Kōbu Railway, the line that became today's Chūō Main Line; at first its only entrance was on the present south side. The Kōbu Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1906, and the line-naming ordinance of 12 October 1909 placed the station on the Chūō East Line, which was renamed the Chūō Main Line in 1911. The Nakano–Kichijōji section, which includes Ogikubo, was double-tracked in March 1909 and electrified in March 1919. The Eidan subway's Ogikubo Line, built largely to relieve congestion on the Japanese National Railways Chūō Line into central Tokyo, opened on 23 January 1962; quadruple-tracking of the Chūō Line between Nakano and Ogikubo was completed on 3 April 1966, and Tōzai Line through services from Nakano began on 28 April 1966. Eidan brought the Ogikubo Line under the Marunouchi Line name on 1 April 1972, and the subway station passed to Tokyo Metro on 1 April 2004 with the privatisation of Eidan. Suica was accepted on the JR side from 18 November 2001 and PASMO on the Metro side from 18 March 2007. Twelve-car operation on the Chūō Line rapid service began on 13 October 2024 after platform extensions were completed the previous day.
