History

Asagaya Station (JC 08 / JB 05) is a JR East Chūō Main Line station in Asagaya-Minami 3-chōme, Suginami, Tokyo, served by both the Chūō Line Rapid (on weekdays) and the Chūō-Sōbu Line Local. The 1922 opening was the result of a local campaign: between the existing Nakano and Ogikubo stations there was no rail access for villagers in Asagaya, so landowner Kibei Aizawa offered his entire holdings to the Ministry of Railways. Initially rebuffed, the campaign succeeded on 15 July 1922. The line here was elevated as a double track on 20 September 1964, and the elevated quadruple-tracking was completed on 3 April 1966; on 28 April 1966 Chūō-Sōbu local services were extended from Nakano to Ogikubo and through running with the Eidan Tōzai Line began. JR East took over on 1 April 1987, and the 'Beans Asagaya' shopping complex, created by refitting the earlier Dila Asagaya, had its grand opening on 18 October 2019.

Notes

Asagaya Station exists thanks to landowner Kibei Aizawa, who offered the entire site of his Asagaya property to the Ministry of Railways to win government approval — and from 7 July 2014, the platform's departure melody is the children's song 'Tanabata-sama' to mark Asagaya's Tanabata Festival.
