History

Nishimuta Station opened on 17 May 1937 as a passenger station established by the Railway Ministry on the Kagoshima Main Line, beginning general transport operations on 1 April 1944. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1961 and parcel handling on 20 February 1971, leaving it unstaffed; it was rebuilt with a simplified station building in 1976. It was inherited by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987. It became staffed again in 1996; the IC card "SUGOCA" became usable there from 1 March 2009, but it became unstaffed again on 26 March 2016 owing to rationalization. It is located in Nishimuta, Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture; its station number is JB19.

Notes

The station name derives from the place name at opening, "Nishimuta Village, Mizuma District"; "muta" means "land reclaimed from wetland." Kyushu has many wetland areas, and place names containing "muta," such as "Ōmuta," are distributed throughout the region.
