History
Nishi-Urakami Station opened as a temporary station on 9 March 1987, operated by Japanese National Railways. It is located in Otonashi-machi, Nagasaki City, and its provisional name at opening was "Akasako Station." With the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April that year it was transferred to JR Kyushu and simultaneously upgraded to a permanent station. Its platform's initial usable length was 90 meters, and it has been unstaffed since opening. The "SUGOCA" IC card was introduced on 1 December 2012. It belongs to the Nagasaki Main Line's Nagayo branch (the old line), lying between Michinoo and Urakami stations, and is a ground-level station with one side platform serving one track. There was formerly a period when it operated as a simplified-consignment station with a ticket counter.
Notes
Before opening, the station was provisionally referred to as 'Akasako Station,' a working name dropped in favour of Nishi-Urakami when JNR launched the temporary stop a little under a month before privatisation.
