History
Nishi-Izumo Station is a general station that opened on 21 November 1913 as Chiimiya Station, when the Railway Agency's San'in Main Line was extended from Izumo-Imaichi Station (now Izumoshi Station) to Oda Station. The section from Hōki-Daisen Station to this station was electrified on 1 July 1982, and freight handling ended on 1 November 1986, when the station became unstaffed. It was transferred to JR West at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 and staffed again at the same time, but became unstaffed once more on 10 March 1990. On 18 March 1993 the station was renamed to its present name, Nishi-Izumo. Between 1998 and 1999 the south-entrance station plaza, an overpass, and a south-entrance waiting room were successively built. Since 15 March 2008, one round trip of the limited express "Super Matsukaze" has stopped there.
Notes
Adjacent to the west side of the station is the Izumo Branch of the Gotō General Rolling Stock Depot, and the station marks the western end, on the main line, of the electrified section continuing from Hōki-Daisen Station. Between October 1987 and March of the following year, the sleeper limited express "Izumo 3," which departed from Tokyo, was operated as a local train onward to this station after arriving at Izumoshi, considered a rare case of a sleeper limited express's terminal section being run as a local train.
