History

Izumo-Jinzai Station is a station in Higashi-Jinzai-chō, Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, that opened as a newly built station named Jinzai Station on 1 July 1982, between Chiimiya Station (now Nishi-Izumo Station) and Kōnan Station on the Japanese National Railways' San'in Main Line; it is the newest JR station in Shimane Prefecture. It was established as a condition for providing land for a rolling-stock depot, in connection with the electrification of the San'in Main Line between Hōki-Daisen Station and Chiimiya Station. It became a station of JR West at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. After Taisha Station was closed with the abolition of the Taisha Line in 1990, the station was renamed "Izumo-Taisha-guchi" on 18 March 1993 from a tourism-promotion standpoint. Passenger numbers did not increase even after the renaming, and following complaints and recommendations regarding improving access to Izumo-taisha, it was renamed again, to its present name, Izumo-Jinzai, on 13 March 1999.

Notes

Of the roughly 25.8 million yen cost of the 1999 renaming, Izumo City bore about 12 million yen. The name "Izumo" was attached to the station name at the time of the renaming to represent either Izumo City, the location, or Izumo Province, the historical provincial name, distinguishing it from a station named after Izumo-taisha itself.
