History
Nagaike Station opened on 25 January 1896, when the Nara Railway extended its line between Momoyama and Tamamizu stations. It became a Kansai Railway station through a merger in February 1905, was nationalized on 1 October 1907, and was assigned to the Nara Line when line names were established in 1909. Freight handling ended in April 1972, and the station was unstaffed in October 1984. It passed to JR West at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and ICOCA service began in November 2003. An elevated station building above the tracks came into use on 27 May 2012; the building also serves as a community space for local residents. The station is positioned as the southern gateway to Jōyō City.
Notes
The design of the elevated station building incorporates imagery of the "pond" (ike) in the station's name and of the plum tree, the city's official tree, with purple — representing the Japanese iris, the city's official flower — used as an accent color.
