History
Mukōgaoka-Yūen Station opened on 1 April 1927 as Inada-Noborito Station on the Odakyu Odawara Line in what is now Tama-ku, Kawasaki. The station was renamed on 1 April 1955 to promote the adjacent Mukōgaoka-Yūen amusement park, which itself closed on 31 March 2002. The Mukōgaoka-Yūen Monorail opened from this station to the park's main gate on 23 April 1966 and was discontinued on 1 February 2001. As part of the Higashi-Kitazawa–Izumi-Tamagawa quadruple-tracking programme, the up line between the neighbouring Noborito Station and this station was widened to two tracks, a triple-tracking completed in March 2009. Approach melodies taken from the theme songs of Doraemon and Kiteretsu Daihyakka were introduced in September 2011 to mark the opening of the nearby Fujiko F. Fujio Museum.
Notes
The station's original 1927 name, Inada-Noborito, came from its site at Noborito in the former village of Inada, which was absorbed into Kawasaki in 1938. The present name was adopted in 1955 to raise the profile of the neighbouring Mukōgaoka-Yūen amusement park; the park closed in 2002, but the name had taken hold and has never been changed — even though the Mukōgaoka it refers to is properly an area further to the south-east, not the ground around the station.
