History

Minoshima Station opened on 28 February 1924 as the terminus of the Kisei West Line in what is now Arida, Wakayama Prefecture. It became a through-station on 11 December 1925 when the line was extended south to Kii-Miyahara. The route was consolidated as the Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959, and a 1980 timetable revision made the station a stop for some Kuroshio limited expresses. JR West took control at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Barrier-free works including platform-gap fills and an elevator were completed in March 2014, IC card service began in December 2016, and the Midori-no-Madoguchi closed on 29 February 2020, replaced by a ticket-vending machine.

Notes

Although Minoshima is the central station of Arida city, the name follows the former town name of Minoshima, the city itself having been named after the surrounding county. Other stations do carry the Arita name: Arita Station on the Sasebo Line in Saga Prefecture, and Kii-Arita Station in Kushimoto, which is on the same Kisei Main Line.
