History
Kyoto-kawaramachi Station opened on 17 June 1963 as Kawaramachi Station, the new terminus of the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line after an underground extension from Ōmiya, and it remains Hankyu's easternmost station. Automatic fare gates were installed in October 1973, and in 1976 the station received Hankyu's first flap-style departure indicator. It lies directly beneath the Shijō-Kawaramachi crossing in downtown Kyoto and connects underground to Karasuma Station below Shijō Street. Station numbering arrived in December 2013 (HK-86), and on 1 October 2019 the station was renamed Kyoto-kawaramachi to make its central Kyoto location clearer to Japanese and overseas visitors. The Hankyu department store that once linked directly to the station from above has since closed.
Notes
An underground passage beneath Shijō Street links the station to neighbouring Karasuma Station (HK-85), about ten minutes' walk away, and the station's own entrances are numbered 1 to 12 — with exit 7 conspicuously absent.
