History

Karasuma Station opened on 17 June 1963 when the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line was extended from Ōmiya to Kawaramachi (now Kyoto-kawaramachi). The station sits under the Shijō-Karasuma crossing and is generally referred to locally by the corner's name, Shijō-Karasuma. The east ticket gate was closed on 1 June 1983 for work on the east–west connecting underground passage and reopened on 1 October 1984, the passage itself being completed on 27 October. Platforms were lengthened in April 1985 for ten-car express running, and station numbering HK-85 was introduced on 21 December 2013. The Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line's Shijō Station is reached via a short underground transfer.

Notes

Although Karasuma is only one stop short of the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line's terminus, its 2025 all-year average of 80,522 boarding and alighting passengers a day ranked fourth among all 86 Hankyu stations — ahead of the terminal Kyoto-kawaramachi, largely thanks to transfers to the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line.
