History
Kure Station opened as a terminus on 27 December 1903, when the government railway's line between Kaitaichi Station and this station opened. It was leased to the Sanyō Railway on 1 December 1904, and became a government railway station again with the nationalization of the Sanyō Railway on 1 December 1906. It became part of the Kure Line under the line-name designation of 12 October 1909, and became an intermediate station when the Kure Line was extended between this station and Hiro Station on 24 March 1935. It was burned down entirely in the Kure air raid of 1 July 1945; a barracks-style station building was erected by a military construction unit, after which the third-generation station building was completed on 30 April 1946. The current elevated station building (fourth generation), combined with a station building complex, began use on 7 July 1981. It became a JR West station with the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.
Notes
Since 1 July 2013 the train-approach melody at Kure has been the opening theme of the anime Space Battleship Yamato, chosen because the battleship Yamato was built at the Imperial Japanese Navy's Kure Naval Arsenal in the city; the Yamato Museum stands just south of the station today.
