History

Kawaraishi Station was established as a passenger station with one side platform and one track between Kure and Yoshiura stations when the present Kure Line was fully opened on 24 November 1935. The year before, in 1934, eleven town representatives had petitioned the Moji Railway Bureau, through the chamber of commerce, for a new station to be built. It suspended operations on 1 November 1940, and reopened on 1 August 1958 as an unstaffed station handling only diesel-railcar passengers. It passed to JR West at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and on 7 February 1999 it was relocated 500 m toward Hiroshima from its previous site, reopening at its present location as an exchange station with two side platforms and two tracks. Its station number is JR-Y13.

Notes

For the 1999 relocation of the station, service between Saka and Kure stations was suspended from 20:00 on the evening of 6 February for track-switching work, with substitute bus transport provided.
