History

Kowata Station opened on 1 June 1913 with the launch of the Keihan Electric Railway's Uji Line, serving Uji in Kyoto Prefecture. Its Keihan reading, "Kowata," distinguishes it from a nearby JR West station that shares the same kanji but is read "Kohata." Corporate mergers briefly folded it into Keihanshin Kyuko Dentetsu in 1943 before it reverted to Keihan Electric Railway in 1949. Built on a flood-prone alluvial fan where the Uji and Yamashina rivers meet, the station has weathered repeated inundations over the decades. It is now a ground-level station, numbered KH74, with two opposing side platforms between Rokujizo and Obaku stations on the Uji Line.

Notes

Since the station's in-station level crossing was abolished in 1998, passengers can no longer walk between Kowata's two platforms without first leaving the paid area.
