History

Koike Station, on the Toyohashi Railroad Atsumi Line at Aza Harashita, Koike-chō, Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, carries station number 3. It opened as an Atsumi Electric Railway station on 1 May 1925, established at the same time as the opening of the Atsumi Line. Following a 1940 merger into Nagoya Railroad (Meitetsu), it became a station of the present-day Toyohashi Railroad through a postwar transfer of the line. Many people connected with Aichi University once used the station, which was then staffed, but ridership declined after Daigaku-mae Station (now Aichi Daigaku-mae Station) opened, and the station was subsequently unstaffed. Between this station and Aichi Daigaku-mae Station lies an underground section called the "Koike Zuidō" (Koike Tunnel), built to grade-separate the line from National Route 259 and Aichi Prefectural Route 502.
