History

Kita-Sasebo Station opened on 9 November 1935 with the opening of the Railway Ministry's Sasebo Line from Sasebo Station to this station. On 30 August 1943 the section from this station to Hidariishi opened as the regauged, newly built Matsuura Line, and the Sasebo Station–this station section was also incorporated into the Matsuura Line, making this a Matsuura Line station. Freight handling (small-lot only) ended on 15 January 1960, and parcel handling ended on 1 October 1970, the station becoming unstaffed the same day. It became a JR Kyushu Matsuura Line station at the JNR privatization of 1 April 1987, and was converted to the third-sector Matsuura Railway on 1 April 1988, becoming a Nishi-Kyushu Line station.

Notes

Kita-Sasebo Station is an unstaffed ground-level station with one island platform and two tracks. Around 2003 half of the station building was demolished to make way for a parking lot, and the building was later demolished entirely, with a restroom built on the site. Within the yard, the Sasebo-side section becomes elevated partway along, so from that side it looks like an elevated station. Average daily ridership in fiscal 2023 was 539.
