History

Kita-Sabae Station opened on 1 May 1955 as a newly built passenger station of Japanese National Railways on the Hokuriku Main Line, between Sabae Station and Ōtoro Station. Parcel handling ended in 1971, and the station became unstaffed. It passed to JR West at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The ICOCA IC card became usable there from 15 September 2018. With the separation of JR West's Hokuriku Main Line operations following the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Kanazawa and Tsuruga on 16 March 2024, it became a station of the third-sector operator Hapi Line Fukui. It is a ground-level station with an island platform serving two tracks; in addition to the east-side station building and overpass dating from opening, a west exit extending from the overpass has also been provided.

Notes

Although Kita-Sabae is an unstaffed station, it long held a curious distinction: until the 2024 transfer to Hapi-Line Fukui, it was the only station in Fukui Prefecture for which JR West's Kanazawa Branch appointed an "honorary stationmaster", a post given to a retired JNR/JR employee living near the station.
