History

Kawanoe Station was established on 1 April 1916 as a station of the Imperial Railway Agency. An overpass was installed in late October 1957, and the station building was rebuilt on 25 March 1983. Freight handling ended in 1984 and parcel handling in 1986, and the station passed to JR Shikoku at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. In the 1 June 1988 line-name revision, the Yosan Main Line was renamed the Yosan Line, and the station came under it. From October 2021 a Midori no Kenbaiki Plus (green ticket machine) began operating, and the Midori no Madoguchi ceased operation on 31 December of the same year. Its station number is Y22, and the limited expresses 'Shiokaze' and 'Ishizuchi' stop here.

Notes

It is the easternmost station in Ehime Prefecture, and the Yosan Line crosses the border into Kagawa Prefecture through the Torigoe Tunnel between this station and neighboring Minoura Station. The catchphrase on the station's display panel is 'The Paper Station, in a Town Wrapped Entirely in Paper.'
