History
Kainan Station opened in February 1924 as Hikatamachi Station when the Japanese National Railways Kisei West Line opened between Wakayama (present-day Kiwa) and Minoshima stations. It was renamed Kainan Station in July 1936 upon the town's incorporation as a city. It came under the Kisei Main Line when that line was completed through in July 1959, and became a JR West station at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. It was elevated and expanded to two platforms serving four tracks in October 1998, and the ICOCA IC card became usable in 2015. It is the principal station of Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, where all scheduled trains, including the limited express 'Kuroshio,' stop.
Notes
Before the 1998 elevation, there had been a plan for the adjacent Nokami Electric Railway's Hikata Station (opened 1916), had it survived, to be relocated to Kainan Station's east exit, but this was not realized due to the Nokami Electric Railway's full-line abolition in 1994.
