History
Irinaka Station opened on 18 March 1977 as a station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway Tsurumai Line. It is located in Hayatochō, Shōwa-ku, Nagoya, and carries station number T14. The station's name derives from "Irinaka," a small placename in Hirojichō. Because "杁" is a kokuji (a character created in Japan) used only in the Owari region and was not among the tōyō kanji, the station name is written entirely in hiragana — the only station name on the Nagoya Municipal Subway written solely in hiragana. Many students use the station because Nanzan Junior and Senior High School and the Chukyo University-affiliated Chukyo Senior High School are nearby, but ridership related to Nanzan University's Nagoya Campus — once the station nearest to it — has declined because the Meijō Line extension (with the opening of Yagoto-Nisseki and Nagoya University stations) made that line the nearest one by 2004.
Notes
Because "杁" is a kokuji used only in the Owari region and outside the tōyō kanji, the station's name is the only one on the Nagoya Municipal Subway written solely in hiragana.
