History
Iinuma Station opened on 28 October 1991 as a new station on the Akechi Railway's Akechi Line, built at the request of local residents. It is one of the few stations newly built during the Akechi Railway era, with station number 9. Located at Ichinotsubo, Iinuma, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, it is an unstaffed, ground-level station with only a single side platform serving one track, with an effective platform length of 55 meters. From its opening until 1996, it was the station situated on the steepest gradient of any conventional railway in Japan. Although the ministerial ordinance setting technical standards for railways normally caps gradients at 5 permille, the station is set on a steep 33 permille (33/1000) gradient; at opening, safety-confirmation tests for stopping and starting trains were repeated with officials from the Ministry of Transport present, and the station's installation was approved under a special exception.
Notes
From its 1991 opening until 1996, Iinuma Station stood on the steepest gradient of any conventional railway station in Japan, and its construction required special authorization from the Ministry of Transport.
