History

Higashi-Suma Station was established as Ōte Station when the Hyōgo Electric Tramway opened its line between Hyōgo (later Dentetsu-Hyōgo) and Suma (now Sanyo-Suma) on 15 March 1910. When a new Ōte Station opened between this station and Itayado Station on 12 April 1917, it was renamed Suma-Higashiguchi Station. It became a station of Ujigawa Electric in 1927 and of Sanyo Electric Railway in 1933, and was renamed Higashi-Suma Station on 1 April 1944. It became an elevated-concourse station on 27 March 1968, when turnback tracks were installed. Yard functions were relocated here from Nishidai Station on 1 July 1978. It was temporarily closed by the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and reopened in stages in February and March of that year.

Notes

Toward Tsukimiyama Station from the station is the Higashi-Suma rail yard, where some through trains from the Hanshin direction and trains starting or terminating at Sanyo-Suma are turned back.
