History

Higashi-Ichiki Station opened as a Railway Agency station on 11 October 1913. It came under the Kagoshima Main Line on 17 October 1927, with the completion of the through line from Yatsushiro Station to Kagoshima Station. Located at Nagasato, Higashi-Ichiki-chō, Hioki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, it is a ground-level station with one island platform serving two tracks. Its operations were scaled back over time — freight handling ended on 1 September 1961, baggage handling ended on 14 March 1985, and it became unstaffed on 7 March 1990 — before it was staffed again in April 1993; it was made unstaffed once more in 2004 as part of rationalization, and from August that year it has operated as a simplified-consignment station, entrusted to the Hioki City Higashi-Ichiki branch office, which in turn subcontracts it to the Hioki City Silver Human Resources Center. It was inherited by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.

Notes

Around the station are the Miyama district, known as the birthplace of Satsuma ware pottery, the ruins of Ichiki Tsurumaru Castle, and the Tōgō Shigenori Memorial Museum, making the station a gateway, though some distance away, to sites of historical and ceramic interest.
