Location
History
Hashihama Station opened on 1 December 1924 as a station on the Yosan Line (then called the San'yo Line, 讃予線). It had originally been planned to run directly to the inland Ōi area, but at the request of the Hashihama district—home to many wealthy residents from salt-field development—the route between Imabari and Ōnishi stations was made to take a roundabout course, and the station ended up sited partway along a curve set apart from the centers of both districts. Freight handling ended on 8 November 1971 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and on 1 April of that same year the station ceased to have staff assigned to it and was placed under simplified contracted operation. It became a JR Shikoku station at the 1 April 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and is now unstaffed. It is the northernmost station in Ehime Prefecture.
Notes
Before the station opened, on 7 September 1924, a train hauling construction ballast wagons overturned while attempting to pass through a switch within the station yard, an accident that killed three people instantly, including a signalman, and seriously injured three others and slightly injured four more.
