Location
History
Hachiōji Station opened on 11 August 1889 as the western end of the Kōbu Railway's Tachikawa–Hachiōji extension, originally on a site north-east of the present location. In 1901 it was moved to a point about 150 metres west of where the station stands today, as the government railway pushed on toward Uenohara. Kōbu was nationalised in 1906, the Yokohama Line joined the junction in 1908, and the Hachikō Line opened in December 1931. Wartime air raids in August 1945 destroyed the building, and the fifth-generation station building — the "Hachiōji NOW" complex, anchored by a Sogo department store — was completed on 1 November 1983, reopening after refurbishment as the CELEO Hachiōji North Building in 2012.
Notes
Yokohama Line trains briefly ran as the Rail Bureau's "Happin Line" between 1910 and 1917, when the formerly private Yokohama Railway was operated on lease by the government before outright nationalisation.
