History

Echigo Oshiage Hisui Kaigan Station opened on 13 March 2021 on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway's Nihonkai Hisui Line, in the city of Itoigawa, Niigata. After the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to Kanazawa, the parallel Hokuriku Main Line was transferred to the newly established third-sector public-private company Echigo Tokimeki Railway, and Niigata Prefecture and the railway then considered adding a station near a local school and hospital to raise revenue and cover operating costs. In September 2019 the Bureau of Hokuriku Transportation, part of MLIT, approved the new station, at that point tentatively named Oshiage Shineki. Construction began on 14 March 2020; a public survey on the name was held on 10 June, and the name Echigo Oshiage Hisui Kaigan was chosen on 9 August 2020. The station's construction cost was partly subsidised by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT) and local government.
