History

Biwajima Station opened on 1 April 1886 as Kiyosu Station, the temporary western terminus of the JGR Tōkaidō Line extension from Atsuta, in present-day Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture. The original building was destroyed by the Nōbi earthquake of 1891, and on 16 April 1906 the station was relocated to its present site and renamed Biwajima. JR Central inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation and TKJ's Jōhoku Line was added in March 1993 with the extension from Owari-Hoshinomiya. Freight handling ceased in 2006, and an overhead bridge-style station building opened on 13 December 2008. Station numbering CA69 was introduced in March 2018.
