History
Azuma Station opened on 10 October 1912 on the Shimabara Railway Line in Ushiguchimyō, Azuma-chō, Unzen, Nagasaki, originally under the name Yamadamura Station. It was renamed Azuma on 5 November 1960, contracted out to operating staff on 1 February 1966, lost freight service on 30 June 1970, gained a new station building in November 1986, took the subtitle "Unzen-Shiyakusho-mae" on 1 October 2019, and was fully de-staffed on 12 March 2022.
Notes
Combined with Aino Station on the same Shimabara Railway, the station's name evokes the phrase itoshi no wagatsuma — "my beloved wife" — so a one-way ticket from Aino Station to Azuma Station is treated as a good-luck charm. The Shimabara Railway sells a "Most-Beloved Certificate" with that Aino–Azuma one-way ticket enclosed.
