History

Akase opened on 5 August 1907 as the seasonal Akase Temporary Stop, established by the Japanese Government Railway to serve nearby beachgoers. It was reclassified from a simple stop to a provisional stop on 16 October 1909 and was promoted to a full station on 1 January 1941. Parcel handling began on 1 May 1953, and on 1 April 1962 the station was placed under contract operation by Nippon Kōtsū Kankōsha. Parcel handling was abolished on 20 September 1973, and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR Kyushu, which still operates it as part of the Misumi (Amakusa-Misumi) Line.

Notes

Akase appeared on the spring 1998 Seishun 18 Kippu poster, helping cement its reputation as a "secluded station" tucked into the hills above the coast.
