History
Zenkōji Station was established as "Zenkōji Stop" on 30 March 1928, when the Fuji-Minobu Railway opened its line between Ichikawa-Daimon and Kōfu. On 1 October 1938 the Ministry of Railways leased the line, upgraded the stop to a station, and began freight handling. It was nationalized on 1 May 1941 and became a station on the Ministry of Railways' Minobu Line. Freight handling was discontinued on 1 November 1960, and the station became unstaffed on 10 April 1983. The station building was later destroyed by fire, and today only a small waiting shelter on the platform and a roofed staircase up the embankment remain. It became a JR Central station with the privatization and division of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and the TOICA IC card became usable there from 1 October 2025.
Notes
The station is the nearest to Kai-Zenkōji Temple, and during periods of heavy pilgrimage the limited express "Fujikawa" sometimes makes special stops there. Before the station opened, a temporary stop called "Kai-Zenkōji Kari-teishajō" had briefly been established on the parallel Chūō Main Line, from 5 April to 4 June 1917.
