History

Yū Station opened on 25 September 1897 when the Sanyo Railway's line was completed from Hiroshima to Tokuyama. Following nationalization in December 1906 and incorporation into the Sanyo Main Line in October 1909, freight handling ended in 1962 and parcel handling in 1984. From 1978 it became a stop for rapid trains. It passed to JR West at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways, and a Midori no Madoguchi ticket office opened in November 1992. From 1986 to 2011 there was a period when through trains from the Kure Line terminated and turned back at this station, and from 2015 through trains from the Kure Line terminating at this station have again operated, using 227 series electric multiple units. The Midori no Madoguchi ceased operation in September 2022, and the station became unstaffed the following October.

Notes

Near the station is the Hiroshima Toyo Carp's Yū training ground (a farm-team ballpark), and from May 2017 the train-approach melody was changed to the Carp cheering song 'Sore Ike Carp.'
