History

Yoyogi-Hachiman Station opened on 1 April 1927 on the Odakyū Odawara Line as a stop served only by local trains. It survived the air raid of 20 May 1945 thanks to firefighting by neighbourhood residents and staff from Shimo-Kitazawa Station. From 1 October 1972, ahead of the Chiyoda Line's extension from Kasumigaseki to Yoyogi-kōen later that month, weekday rush-hour semi-express trains towards Shinjuku began calling here and through-ticketing with the Chiyoda Line's Yoyogi-kōen Station began; the arrangement ended on 31 March 1978, when the Chiyoda Line was extended to Yoyogi-Uehara and the station reverted to local-only service. Station numbering arrived in January 2014, and a major rebuild ran from 2015 to 2019: the new overhead concourse and ten-car-length island platform opened on 16 March 2019, and a west connector to Yamate-dōri followed on 30 November 2019.

Notes

The station escaped destruction in the air raid of 20 May 1945 because neighbourhood residents and staff from Shimo-Kitazawa Station fought the fire.
