History
Yashima Station opened on 21 October 1938 as Ugo-Yashima Station on the Ministry of Railways Yashima Line in Yashima-chō, Yuri District (present-day Yurihonjō City, Akita Prefecture). The "Ugo" prefix distinguished it from Yashima Station on the Kōtoku Line. It was renamed Yashima Station and became the terminus of the line when the Yashima Line was converted to the Yuri Kōgen Railway on 1 October 1985. Operations began in a second-generation station building on 25 September 2000, and in 2002 the wooden station building was selected as one of the "100 Notable Stations of Tōhoku." The first-generation station building was demolished in 2011. It is a ground-level station with a single platform serving one track, operated with station staff assigned.
