History

Yanagawa Station opened on 1 April 1949 as a station on Japanese National Railways' Chūō Main Line, initially handling only passengers and small parcels. Parcel handling ended on 1 October 1970 and the station became a commissioned-operation station; it was unstaffed from 1 March 1985. It passed to JR East with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. On 23 November 1990 the station building burned down in an arson attack by radical extremists, and a new wooden station building was completed on 6 March 1992. Suica became usable on 18 November 2001, and the station building was rebuilt again in March 2016 to become the current building.

Notes

Heading out from Tokyo, it is the first fully unstaffed station on the Chūō East Line; platform work to accommodate 12-car trains was completed by October 2024, and 12-car rapid trains began running from the 13th of that month.
