History
Yamazaki Station opened on 9 August 1876 on the government railway's Mukōmachi–Takatsuki section, handling both passengers and freight from the start; it became part of the Tōkaidō Line in 1895, renamed the Tōkaidō Main Line in 1909. The present wooden station building dates to 1927. Ownership passed to West Japan Railway Company when Japanese National Railways was privatized on 1 April 1987, and in March 2018 the station was assigned the code JR-A36. Today it has two island platforms serving four tracks, plus a siding, and is served only by local trains on the JR Kyoto Line, between Nagaokakyō and Shimamoto.
Notes
The platform sits astride the Kyoto–Osaka prefectural border, marked by a boundary sign, and because an identically written station exists on Hokkaido's Hakodate Main Line, ticket stock labels this one "(East) Yamazaki" to tell them apart.
