History

Yamaoka Station opened as a general station on 24 June 1934 as Tōyama Station, when the Japanese National Railways' Akechi Line opened between Iwamura and Akechi. It was renamed to its present name, Yamaoka, on 20 December 1956. Wagonload freight and parcel handling ended on 1 December 1974, and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the conversion of the designated local line on 16 November 1985 it became a station of the Akechi Railway and was given station number 3. A cram school opened inside the station building in 1988, and in 1996 a promotional facility themed around agar (kanten), "Healthy House Yamaoka" (now Kantenkan), opened in front of the station. Under the timetable revision of 15 March 2014 it became a stop for the express train "Taishō Roman-gō."

Notes

An agar-themed promotional facility opened in front of the station in 1996, and since 2014, as "Kantenkan," it has incorporated the waiting room within the facility, forming an agar-themed station-front space.
