History
Yamanokuchi Station opened on 15 August 1914 as the new eastern terminus of the Japanese Government Railways Miyazaki Line. It became a through-station on 21 March 1916 when the track was extended further east to Aoidake, and on 15 December 1923 the route was absorbed into the Nippō Main Line. Freight handling ended on 1 February 1971 and baggage handling on 1 February 1984; the station became unstaffed on 14 March 1985 and passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 at privatisation. A third-generation station building, the Yamanokuchi Tourism & Sports Exchange Centre, opened on 1 June 2024 ahead of the 2027 National Sports Festival to be held nearby.
Notes
On 11–12 November 1935 the Emperor Shōwa rode his Imperial Train between Miyakonojō and Yamanokuchi during military exercises held along the line.
