History

Yakumo Station opened on 3 November 1903 with the opening of the Hokkaido Railway's Mori–Neppu section. After the Hokkaido Railway was nationalised on 1 July 1907, the station became part of the Hakodate Main Line when the line names were established in 1909. The station building was rebuilt in 1915 and again in 1930 and 1969. Freight handling was discontinued on 1 February 1984 and baggage handling on 14 March 1985. The station passed to JR Hokkaido at privatisation on 1 April 1987. Following the demotion of Washinosu Station to a signal station in March 2016, Yakumo became the westernmost passenger station with regular service in Hokkaido.

Notes

On 9 August 1954 the Imperial train carrying Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun stopped at the station for an official welcome by the townspeople of Yakumo.
