Location
History
Yachigashira Stop (Y26) is the southern terminus of the Hakodate City Tram Hōrai-Yachigashira Line in Yachigashira-chō 35-banchi and 25-banchi, Hakodate, Hokkaidō — the southernmost streetcar stop in Hakodate and in Hokkaidō. It opened on 30 October 1913, and on 2 January 1999 a tram that had slid downhill from the previous stop rode over the wheel stop on the rails and knocked down the rubber-cushioned metal car-body buffer stop, striking and completely destroying the prefabricated waiting room; after the accident a sturdy concrete buffer stop and a cushioning ballast bed were installed. A station-turnback-line and track-renewal project ran on 30 November 2017, with the Jūjigai–Yachigashira section closed all day for the works.
Notes
At 58.3 ‰ the gradient between Yachigashira and Aoyagi-chō is the steepest active stretch on the Hakodate City Tram — well above the 40 ‰ ceiling that Article 16 of the Tramway Construction Regulations (a national ministerial ordinance) normally allows on a main line, though an exception clause permits up to 67 ‰ on special sections. After the 1999 crash, a stop sign was added before the curve partway down the slope, at Aoyagi-chō 34-banchi, and every tram now halts at that point before proceeding to the stop.
