History
Wanishi Station opened on 10 September 1928 as a station on the Ministry of Railways' Muroran Main Line. The site had earlier hosted Hokkaido Coal Mine Railway's first Muroran Station (1892), later the first-generation Wanishi Station, but this had relocated to Itanki (today's Higashi-Muroran Station) in 1920 as the Wanishi Ironworks expanded. As the ironworks grew, a new town developed on the mountain side, and in response to a 1927 petition from residents the present station was established. Parcel handling was discontinued in 1980, and on 1 April 1984 the station was placed under simplified contract and left unstaffed, with the Muroran consumers' co-operative taking over operations. It passed to JR Hokkaido at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and in 1994 the simplified contract was also ended, leaving the station fully unstaffed.
Notes
Passenger use has collapsed: the station recorded about 13,000 boardings and alightings a day in 1961, 294 in fiscal 1992, and just 52 in 2014.
