Location

History

Wakasa Station opened on 1 December 1930 as the terminus when the Japanese Government Railways' Wakasa Line, extended from Hayabusa Station, was completed throughout. It is the easternmost station in Tottori Prefecture and in the Chūgoku region, and also houses the Wakasa Railway's head office and depot. Freight handling ended on 1 October 1974 and parcel handling ended on 1 February 1984; the station passed to JR West at the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and became a station of the Wakasa Railway when the line was converted to third-sector operation on 14 October of the same year. On 23 July 2008 a complete set of facilities on the station grounds, including the station building, turntable, and water tower, was collectively registered as national Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. On 16 January 2020 it concluded a sister-station agreement with Neiwan Station on the Taiwan Railway Administration's Neiwan Line.

Notes

On 23 July 2008, a complete set of Wakasa Line facilities — the station building, platform, turntable, water tower, and various depots — was collectively registered as national Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, the first such case in Japan.
