History

Usuda Station opened on 28 December 1915 as Sandanda Station when the Saku Railway's line between Nakagomi and Haguroshita came into service, handling both passengers and freight. It was absorbed into the Railway Ministry's Kōmi Kita Line (later the Kōmi Line) with the nationalization of the Saku Railway in 1934, and was renamed Usuda Station on 1 October 1963 following a merger of local municipalities. Freight handling ended in 1970 and parcel handling in 1984; the station passed to JR East at the 1987 division and privatization of Japanese National Railways. In 2020 the crossing loop was abolished with the introduction of a radio-based train control system, the No. 2 platform track was removed the following year, 2021, leaving a single through track, and in 2024 the station became a simple-consignment station.

Notes

The renaming from Santanda to Usuda, the source of the station's present name, took place in 1963, and the station is known as the nearest one to the point in Japan farthest from the sea (the point itself lies in the mountains).
