History
Usu Station opened on 10 September 1928 as a general station, with the opening of the Railway Ministry's Osawa Line between Shizukari and Date-Monbetsu stations. On 1 April 1931 the Osawa Line was absorbed into the Muroran Main Line, and the station became part of that line. Freight handling ended on 15 January 1962, and parcel handling ended on 15 May 1980 with the station becoming unstaffed (under simplified consignment); JR Hokkaido took over the station at the 1 April 1987 privatization and division of Japanese National Railways. In 1989 the station building was rebuilt, adopting decorative beams and retro-style lighting fixtures for the interior, with a symmetrical exterior design featuring a daylight window set in the central gabled section. It is now an unstaffed station managed by Date-Monbetsu Station; the line is single-tracked between Tōya Station and this station and double-tracked between this station and Nagawa Station.
Notes
Usu's 1989 rebuilt station building has a symmetrical gabled roof with a light-window at its peak, exposed decorative beams, and retro-style fixtures, giving the modest unstaffed stop an unusually distinctive look for a small Muroran Main Line halt.
