History

Ushirogata Station opened on 5 December 1951 as a stop on the Japanese National Railways Tsugaru Line in what is now the city of Aomori. Freight handling other than small-lot consignments ended on 21 October 1958, and all freight services were discontinued on 21 July 1968. On 10 March 1983 the passing loop was removed, parcel handling ended, and the station was placed under simplified contracted operation (managed by the local agricultural cooperative). JR East took over on 1 April 1987, and the station has been unattended since September 2009. Its short side platform requires longer trains to use selective door operation, and it lies 14.7 km from the line's starting point at Aomori.
