History

Urayasu Station opened on 28 August 1903 as Yabase Station, the terminus when the government railway extended its line from Mikuriya Station to this station. It became a through station with the extension to Kurayoshi Station on 20 December that year, and was placed on the San'in Main Line under the line-naming system established on 12 October 1909. It was renamed Higashi-Yabase on 20 August 1938, and Urayasu on 15 December 1949. On 21 October 1985, the Imperial train carrying Emperor Shōwa, timed to coincide with the 40th National Sports Festival, ran from this station to Hōki-Daisen Station. It passed to JR West with the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, and became unstaffed on 14 March 2020. ICOCA is scheduled to be introduced in spring 2027.

Notes

With the removal of the overpass footbridge within the station, operations moved to a temporary station building from May 2025; discussions began in August 2023 under which JR West would demolish the station building, toilet, and overpass, after which Kotoura Town would build a smaller new station building.
