History
Urakawa Station is an island-platform JR Central stop on the Iida Line in Tenryū-ku, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, 57.3 km from the line's origin at Toyohashi. It opened on 11 November 1934 as a general station on the Sanshin Railway with the extension from Sanshin-Miwa (today Tōei) to Sakuma (today Chūbu-Tenryū). When the Sanshin Railway line was nationalised as part of the Iida Line on 1 August 1943, the station passed to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, later Japanese National Railways. Dedicated-siding freight handling ended on 31 March 1980. With CTC commissioning on 24 February 1984 the station was contracted out, and from 1 March 1987 became unmanned overnight. It passed to JR Central at the 1 April 1987 JNR breakup and became completely unstaffed on 1 February 1991.
Notes
Urakawa is a scheduled stop for the seasonal "Iida Line Hikyō-eki" (secluded-station) express in the up direction, despite seeing only around 30 boarding passengers a day.
