History
Daigaku-byōin opened on 16 May 1947 as Iwakawa-machi, on the straight new alignment laid under the city plan when the line was restored after the 9 August 1945 atomic bombing; the pre-war route, which had curved east away from Urakami-eki-mae, was abandoned at the same time. An earlier hospital stop — Byōin-shita, opened 16 November 1915 — had stood on that pre-war right-of-way, some 50 metres from the present main gate of Nagasaki University's Faculty of Dentistry in the direction of the Nagasaki Kita Post Office, and had been renamed Byōin-mae in about 1923, Byōin-shita again in 1927 and Byōin-mae once more in September 1936 before the bombing put it out of use for good. The 1947 stop was relocated toward Hamaguchi-machi on 1 February 1954 and renamed Daigaku-byōin-mae; the "-mae" was dropped on 1 August 2018. The footbridge linking the platforms was removed in November 1999 to ease road congestion, and the platforms were lengthened and raised at the same time. It is stop number 21 on the Main Line and serves Nagasaki University Hospital.
