History

Universal City Station opened on 1 March 2001 on the former Ajikawaguchi freight yard, a month before Universal Studios Japan opened next door on 31 March 2001. Designed by architect Tadao Andō with a streamlined white membrane roof evoking a sailing ship, the station replaced the working title "Konohana Rinkai" and was selected among the Kinki Region's "100 best stations" in its second listing. Most of the daily 35,317 riders (FY2024) are theme-park visitors; the station's loadings collapsed during the COVID-19 closures of 2020–22 before rebounding strongly with the run-up to Expo 2025.

Notes

The station shares its name with Universal City Station in Los Angeles, the nearest station to Universal Studios Hollywood.
